PUBLIC PROGRAMS & cOMMUNITY eNGAGEMENT | THE sTUDIO MUSEUM in harlem

Between 2014-2019, Nico served as the Director of Public Programs & Community Engagement at The Studio Museum in Harlem. The pedagogy developed by Wheadon and her team surveyed prevalent issues in contemporary art and black culture, presenting a wide range of public programs and community engagement initiatives that brought the Museum’s mission and exhibitions to life. With a vested interest in both artists and the sociocultural conditions that shape art, the Public Programs & Community Engagement Department worked through a collective impact model that centered art, community, and participation in equal measure.  The team took pause to listen, learn, and draw inspiration from those individuals and organizations already conducting amazing work in Harlem. The programs they delivered—all of which are free and open to the public—demystified artistic practices, elevated creativity as an art form accessible to all, and opened the pathways for direct engagement with contemporary art and artists.
